Non - Participant Observations Flashcards
Is non participant observations primary or secondary data?
Primary data
What is the 1 research for this and explain?
1) Willis (1977) (onpo) - group interviews with 12 WC boys to find out how capitalism shopped their education, did overt non participant observations and saw first hand
What are 2 advantages of practical?
1) schedule - if there’s a structured schedule it will take less time
2) in natural setting so easier to gain access
What are 2 advantages of ethical?
1) informed consent
2) safer for the researcher
What are 2 advantages of theoretical?
1) positivists will like this as it’s structured so it’s reliable
2) researcher isn’t involved so can get valid and little bias results
What are 2 disadvantages of practical?
1) difficult to gain access in certain groups
2) time - consuming it takes time to see their true behaviour
What are 2 disadvantages of ethical?
1) no informed consent - doesn’t reveal the true meaning of the study
2) may be used when groups are unwilling to cooperate
What are 2 disadvantages of theoretical?
1) interpretivists don’t like this method as the whole purpose is to get involved so no verstehen
2) validity - researcher makes their own judgement (subjectivity)
