Parten's Classic Study of Play Flashcards
Unoccupied Behavior
Level 1; The child is not playing and not watching anyone or anything in particular.
Onlooking
Level 2; The child spends most of its time watching other children play.
Solitary play
Level 3; The child plays alone, and makes no apparent connection between his play and the play of other children around him.
Parallel play
Level 4; The child plays alone but with toys that are like those used by other children around him. His play may be similar to the play of nearby children, but he plays beside the other children, not with them.
Associative play
Level 5; The child plays among other children, but his play is not well coordinated with their play. He may talk with the other children and share toys and materials, but his play is still relatively independent.
Cooperative play
Level 6; The child plays with other children, and his play is integrated or coordinated with theirs.
