The eight parts of speech are classified under four headings:

A. Interjection
Noun definition:
Person place thing or idea
Ex: many famous Americans) were born in poverty.
Pronoun definition: word used instead of a noun
Example: (I) am going with you
Verb definition:
Word or group of words used to assert something about a person,place,thing,or idea
Example: mary (plays) the piano well
Modifier definition:
Word or group of words used to change or limit the meaning of another word.
Adjectives and adverbs are
Modifiers
Adverb definition:
Modifies a verb,an adjective, or another adverb.
Example: speak (distinctly)
Adjective definition:
Modifies the meaning of a noun or pronoun.
Example: (the) horse is ( a domestic) animal.
Connectives definition:
Word that joins one word to another or one group of words to another.
Preposition definition:
Shows relationship between it’s object and some word in the sentence.
Example: we are going (to) cleveland this summer.
Conjunction definition:
Connects words or group of words.
Example: Carl (and) John are visiting us.
Interjection definition:
An exclamatory sound used to express some emotion.
Example: (look,)that airplane is flying upside down!
Interjections don’t have
Grammatical connection with sentence
Noun:
Person’s: Dan teacher child
Places: grand canyon, city, Nevada, kitchen
Things: train, lamp, canary,year,bread
Ideas: grief,desire, democracy, speed,bravery
Hints to help you identify nouns:
- The,a, an signal that noun is coming
Example: (a) (book)
(A) green storage (box) - His her my your their our and it’s signal that a noun is coming.
(Can be a few words away)
Example:
(Their) young (child) - When there is three or more nouns in a row the last one only is a noun.
Examples: the American (student) - Words that show ownership signal that a noun is coming
Example: my sister’s mean (boss)
Word endings like -ness, -ion and -ment show a noun is coming
Kind(ness)
Words ending in -ing can be nouns:
Swimming
Pronouns
Personal:
- I
- me
-mine
Indefinite:
-anybody
-each
-few
-someone
Interrogative:
- who
-whom
-what
- which
-whose
Demonstrative:
- this
- that
- these
- those
Possessive:
- my
- mine
- theirs
- our
- your
her
Some pronouns in the personal pronouns can be combined with
- self or selves
Every sentence must contain a
Verb
Verb is a word that expresses
action or otherwise helps make a statement.

Action linking helping
Action verb:
Is verb that expresses mental or physical action
Examples: the owls (hooted) all night
Linking verb: does not
show action but connects the subject with another word.
Common: be
Linking verbs:Forms of the verb be:

Example: I am a photographer
Helping verb: helps either an action verb or a
Linking verb
Words commonly used as helping verbs:
Am is are was were be been being has have had do does did may might must can could shall should will would
Split verb: their are two types
- Verb phrases are sometimes split by adverbs like: not never ever often rarely always only just really and already
Example: ken (does( not (have) a pen - Verb phrases in questions are mostly split by the subjects:
Example: (did) you (watch) the play

It’s- it is or it has
Preposition: the preposition and the noun or pronoun become the
