Ch 2: Algebraic reasoning Flashcards
Addition property of equality
If a=b, then a + c = b+c
Subtraction poe
If a = b, then a - c = b-c
Multiplication poe
If a = b, then a × c = b × c
Division poe
If a = b, then a/c = b/c
Substitution poe
If a = b, then a can be substituted for b ( or b for a) in any eq. Or expression.
Distributive property
Let a,b and c be real numbers
Sum: a (b+c) = ab +ac
Difference: a(b-c) = ab -ac
Addition poe
If you add the same number to both sides of an equation, the equation remains balanced and is still true
Subtraction poe
If you subtract the same numbers from both sides of an equation, the eq remains balanced and true
Multiplication poen
If you multiply both sides of an equation by the same number, the resulting eq is equal
Division poe
If you divide both sides of an equation by the same number then the remaining eq is true
Substitution poe
If two eq. Are equal, then one can be substituted for the other in any eq.
Reflexive property
anything is equal to itself a = a
Symmetric property
If a = b, then b=a
Transitive property
If a = b and b = c, then a = c
