Parotid Region Flashcards
Features of parotid gland
- largest salivary gland
- below external auditors meatus
- overlaps masseter
- skin over it supplied by great auricular N
Capsule of parotid gland
- by investing layer of deep cervical fascia
- fascia splits at angle of mandible
- superficial - adherent to gland, attaches above zygomatic arch
- deep - attached to styloid process, forms stylomandibular ligament
Relations of apex of gland
- overlaps posterior belly of digastric
- cervical branch of facial N and retromandibular V emerge here
Relations of superior surface of gland
- External acoustic meatus
- Temporomandibular joint
- Superficial temporal vessels
- Auriculotemporal N
Relations of superficial surface of gland
- Skin
- Superficial fascia
- Parotid fascia
- Parotid lymph nodes
Relations of anteromedial surface of gland
- Masseter
- Temporomandibular joint
- Ramus of mandible
- Medial pterygoid
- Branches of facial N
Relations of posteromedial surface of gland
- Mastoid process
- SCM
- Posterior belly of digastric
- Styloid process
- External carotid A, facial N
Anterior border of gland
Separates superficial and ant-med surfaces - parotid duct - branches of facial N - transverse facial vessels Emerge from here
Posterior border of gland
Separates superficial and post-med surfaces
Overlaps SCM
Medial border of gland
Separates ant-med and post-med surfaces
Related to lateral wall of pharynx
Arteries within gland
- Ext. Carotid enters thru post-med surface
- Maxillary leaves thru ant-med surface
- Superficial temporal arises from superior surface
Veins within gland
Retromandibular V formed on upper part
Divides into anterior and posterior divisions at lower part
Blood supply of gland
- external carotid and branches
- drains into ext. And int. Jugular
Parasympathetic nerve supply of gland
Inferior salivatory Nucleus - Glossopharyngeal N - Tympanic N - Tympanic plexus - Lesser petrosal N - Otic ganglion - Auriculotemporal N - Gland
Sensory supply of gland
Auriculotemporal
Great auricular
