Parotid Gland Flashcards
Nerve which passes through the parotid gland?
The Facial nerve forming the superficial and deep lobes
The duct which the parotid gland releases into? pierces which muscle? course? location in oral cavity?
Stensen’s duct
Buccinator
Runs superficial to masseter
Opposite maxillary 2nd molar
Parotid lymphatics - drains to?
Superficial and deep cervical nodes
What do preauricular nodes drain?
Temporal scalp
Upper face
Anterior pinna
Lymph nodes with in the PG drain which structures?
Parotid Nasopharynx Palate Middle ear EAM
Parasympathetic innervation of the parotid gland - pre and post-ganglionic?
Preganglionic from glossopharyngeal arrives at otic ganglion via lesser petrosal nerve
Postganglionic leaves otic ganglion an distributes to the parotid gland via auriculotemporal
Sympathetic innervation of the parotid gland?
Postganglionic innervation via superior cervical ganglion via the arterial system
Greater auricular nerve association with the parotid gland?
Crosses the external jugular vein near the PG
Surgery influence
Veins, Arteries, Nerves and Muscles related to the deep lobe of the PG?
V: internal jugular
A: external and internal carotid
B: IX, X, XI, XII
S: styloglossus and stylohyoid muscle
Function of the facial nerve?
Purely motor and supplies the muscles of facial expression
Nervus intermedius - assoc with facial?
Carries parasympathetic (visceral motor), general sensory and taste (special sensory)
Facial nerve branches at the PG?
Temporal - temple Zygomatic - zygomatic arch Buccal - buccal mucosa Marginal mandibular - mandible Cervical - neck
Facial nerve supplies before entering PG?
Stapedius
Occipitofrontalis
Posterior belly of Digastric and Stylohyoid
Nervus intermedius - parasympth? greater petrosal? chorda tymapni?
Parasymph:
- all secretory glands of head and neck (except PG)
Greater Petrosal:
- supplies nasal glands and lacrimal gland
Chorda Tympani:
- supplies submand and sublingual glands
- anterior 2/3 of tongue
Emissary veins pass in the loose areolar tissue - cut?
Can cause gape and increased bleeding
