Paralytic Agents Drugs Flashcards
1
Q
Succinylcholine (depolarizing)
A
MOA: acetylcholine agonist, binds to nicotinic receptor at the neuromuscular junction
Stimulates the muscle so much that it causes muscle paralysis
There is no reversal medication. You will have to ventilate until drug is metabolized
Contraindication: pregnancy, MG (the drugs for mg are the opposite of paralytic)
Side effects: hyperkalemia
Adverse effect: respitory depression , apnea Malignant hyperthermia (if this happens give dantrolene )
2
Q
Vercuronium (non depolarizing )
A
MOA: competitive antagonist ( binds to ACh receptors without inducing the effect of ACh ) which can bring paralysis because it is blocking acetylcholine
Side effect: histamine release leading to rash, hives angiodema, bronchospasm, low BP, tachycardia
Must use REVERSAL AGENT NEOSTIGMINE
