CNS Stimulants/ CNS depressants Flashcards
What kind of drug do you give someone with sleep apnea ?
CNS stimulant
Who don’t you give CNS depressants to?
Sleep apnea, copd and people with respiratory issues
What to do for amphetamines and amphetamine like drugs
Give early in the day
Report irregular heartbeat, palpitations, HTN
Record height, weight, and growth of children
Avoid alcohol, caffeine and nicotine
Use sugarless gum to relieve dry mouth
Do not stop abruptly, taper off to avoid withdrawal symptoms
Counseling must be used for long term use because of dependence
Excreted in Brest milk (avoid while breast feeding)
May cause tics( report to provider )
CNS depressants: Sedation (low dose)
Indication: anxiety, muscle spasms, ETOH withdrawal
Effect : Diminish physical and mental responses
No effect on consciousness
Hyponosis (higher dose)
Indication: induction of anesthesia , insomnia
Effect :sleep, anterograde amnesia
Anesthesia ( very high dose)
Matience of anesthesia
Loss of consciousness, loss of reflexes
What are some side / adverse effects of CNS depressants ?
Overdose, resp depression, severe low BP, death
General anesthesia
Route: inh/IV
General CNS depression
- loss of consciousness, amnesia
- analgesia, complete muscle paralysis , loss of reflexes
Regional anesthesia
Injection close to a nerve
No loss consciousness
Regional effects: analgesia, muscle paralysis, loss of reflexes/ ANS
Can use benzos or opiodes for a sedative effect
Local anesthesia
Local analgesia ( dental procedures, minor surgeries)
Injection/ topical
What inhaled gas do you use for Anesthetics?
Nitrous oxide (NO)
What inhaled volatile liquids do you use for anesthesia?
Isoflurane
Loss of reflexes for Anesthesia is…
Dose dependent
What is malignant hyperthermia ?
Bad fever caused by nitrous oxide and isoflurane
Muscles also become extremely tight
Dantrolene is used to treat it but you need to watch for liver failure
How often is anesthesia given?
Slowly and continuously
