Paper Finish Uses Flashcards
Flexographic printing process
Flexographic printing uses flexible printing plates wrapped around rotating cylinders on a web press. Water-based or UV curable ink is fed from the first roller to the analog roller. The analog roller makes the ink uniform thickness and transfers the ink to the plate cylinder. The substrate moves between the plate cylinder and the impression cylinder. The impression cylinder applies pressure to the plate cylinder to transfer the image onto the substrate. The web which has been printed is fed into an overhead dryer.
Offset lithography printing process
Printing substrate is fed into the printing machinery. Printing plates are produced by computer to plate process via a laser which etches the image onto the plate. The plates are then attached to the machine and bumped by a dumpling roller. The ink is applied to the printing plate. The plate cylinder rotates, onto a blanket roller which becomes coded with ink. As the substrate is fed through the image on the blanket is transferred to the substrate to produce the printed product.
What is offset lithographic printing?
It is based on the principal that oil and water don’t mix as the plates are chemically treated to make the image area absorb oil easily so they use oil-based inks whereas the non-image area is treated to absorb water easily
Flographic printing uses
Newspapers comics, catalogues, labels, carrier bags and continuous pattern products such as wallpaper or wrapping paper
Offset lithographic printing uses
Used for books, magazines posters, and packaging
Advantages of flexographic printing
Hi Principe,
Ideally suited for long runs
Prints on variety of substrate materials
Low cost of equipment
Low maintenance
Disadvantages of flexographic printing
Cost of printing plates is relatively high but they last for millions of printruns
Takes a large amount of substrate to set up the job.
Time consuming to change for any alterations to print content
Lithographic printing advantages
Consistently high image quality.
Suited to high body print runs
Quick and easy production of printing plates.
Long life of printing plates
Disadvantages of lithographic printing
Expensive set up and running costs
Screen printing uses
Posters display boards and T-shirts
Screen printing process
The substrate to be printed sits on the screen print machine base and the upper section secures the screen. The image to be printed is created on a stencil which is stuck to the mesh screen. The screen has open areas for the past three. A different screen is required for each colour.a pigmented printing ink is placed on the screen and a squeeze then used force the ink to flow through the mesh onto the substrate. Once each colour is complete the ink dries
