Metal Processes Flashcards
Work hardening
Hitting metal with hammers or rolling leads to improve its tensile strength and hardness. Causes less ductility and can cause cracks and damage. This is prevented by annealing
Annealing
Used to make work hardened metal easier to work with.
Makes the metal less brittle and more ductile.
Metal is heated and cooled slowly at a specific temperature
Case hardening
Hardening the surface of steel with carbon.
More resistant to scratching and surface indentation
The metal is heated nearly to its melting point, then rapidly cooled in water
Press forming process
Sheet clamped over die
Hydraulic press pushes die into sheet material
Hydraulic die is lowered and pressed sheet is removed
Can be placed into further press forming machines to make complex parts
Press forming scale of production
Mass or large batch
