Pancreas Flashcards
What cells are present in the excretory part of the pancreas and what do they secrete
Acini cells that secrete digestive enzymes
What hormones does the endocrine organ of the pancreas secrete
Insulin and Glucagon
What kind of cells are found in the pancreas, what cell secretes what hormone
Alpha cells - Glucagon
Beta cells - Insulin
What are clusters of cells found on the pancreas called
Islets of langerhans or pancreatic islets
What cell secretes insulin, what is insulins target organ and effect. What triggers insulin
- Secreted by beta cells
- Target organs: Liver, adipose, skeletal muscle
- Effect: Enables cells (liver, adipose, skeletal) to absorb glucose from the blood stream to give cell energy and DECREASE glucose
- Trigger: High blood glucose, regulation.
What cell secretes glucagon, what is glucagon target organ and what triggers glucagon
- Secreted by alpha cells
- Target organ: Liver, some adipose and SM
- Effect: Break down glycogen and fats and release it. INCREASE OF GLUCOSE
- Trigger: Low blood glucose
What are abnormal conditions of the pancreas
Diabetes mellitus
What is Juvenile diabtetes
Insulin dependent - genetic inability to produce insulin (Regulates blood glucose levels)
Type 2 diabetes
Late onset: Noninsulin dependent - complex cause, genetic, diet, obesity
