Blood Components Flashcards
What are the functions of blood
- Transport of blood, hormones, nutrients, molecules
- Regulation of pH and osmosis
- Maintenance of body temperature
- Immunity
- Clotting
What is the pH of blood
7.35 - 7.45 - Slightly alkaline
What is the lightest component of blood and the heavier component of blood. What % does each component represent
Plasma is lighter and makes up 55% of blood volume
Formed elements are heavier and make up 45% of blood volume
What is plasma composed of
91% water, 2% solutes (ions, nutrients, gas), 7% proteins
What is a buffy coat composed of
- Platelets (250-400 thousand)
- WBC (5-10 thousand)
What are formed elements composed of
- RBC represents 95% RBCS 4.2 to 6.2 million
- 5% WBC/ platelets (Buffy coat)
What organ makes plasma proteins. What are the names of these proteins
Plasma protein is made by the liver
- Albumin - 58%
- Globulin - 38%
- Fibrinogen - 4%
What organ makes Albumin and what are the 2 functions of this protein.
- The most abundant protein; Made by the liver
Function: Maintains water in in blood vessels
Function 2: Other molecules attach to the large protein of albumin
What happens if there isn’t enough albumin; is albumin found in the urine
Water molecules will leave the blood vessels and cause edema.
- Albumin is a large molecule and is not found in the urine
What are the 3 types of globulin, where are they made and what is their function
- Alpha and beta globulins are made in the liver and function as transport molecules
- Gamma globulins are immune proteins secreted by immune system cells (Antibodies)
What is the function of Fibrinogen
- Involved in the formation of clotting
What is Plasma called when the Fibrinogen protein is removed
Serum
What is Hematopoiesis and where does it occur
Blood cell formation that occurs in the red bone marrow
In what locations of the adult body can you find red bone marrow
Sternum, ribs, vertebrae, pelvis, proximal epiphysis of humerus and femur
What is a hemocytoblasts
The name of a stem cell where all other blood cells are made
What does a proerythroblast mature inot
Erythrocyte - RBC
What does a Myeloblast mature into
Luekocytes - WBC
What does a lymphoblast mature into
Lymphocyte
What does a monoblast mature into
Monocyte
What does a megakaryoblast mature into
Platelet
