- Analgesic
- Antipyretic

Acetaminophen precautions (3)
A
- Use caution in patients who consume 3 or more alcoholic beverages per day
- Using rifampin, INH, carbamazepine, barbiturates along with acetaminophen increases hepatotoxic effects
- Slows metabolism of warfarin

Acetaminophen side/adverse effects (2)
A
- N/V
- Long term use: hemolytic anemia, leukopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia

Acetaminophen nursing interventions (4)
A
- Monitor kidney/liver function
- Take as prescribed and don’t exceed 3,000mg/24 hours
- Inform patient of risk of hepatotoxicity
- When given to kids dose should be based off age and not exceed 5 doses/day

Bind with opiate receptors in CNS to alter perception of and emotional response to pain

- Meperidine works best for biliary pain
- Monitor for potentiation effects when given with barbiturates, benzodiazepines, phenothiazines, hypnotic, sedatives
