Pain, Inflamation & Fever Flashcards
1
Q
Nociceptive Pain
A
- Activation of normal pain fibres in response to a noxious stimulus
- Eg. Burns, wounds, muscle injury, osteoarthritis
- Sharp, dull, aching, throbbing, hot, stinging
2
Q
Neuropathic Pain
A
- Injury or disease affecting the nervous system
- Eg. Diabetic neuropathy, phantom limb, spinal cord injury
- Pins and needles, tingling, burning, stinging, shooting, radiating
3
Q
Acute Pain
A
- Recent injury (days/weeks)
- Resolves upon healing
4
Q
Chronic Pain
A
- Persistant pain (months/years)
- May be related to ongoing injury/illness
- May persist despite healing of injury
- Requires multidisciplinary approach
5
Q
Inflammation
A
- Local response to tissue damage
- ‘itis’ suffix
6
Q
Inflammation Symptoms
A
- Redness
- Swelling
- Heat
- Pain
- Impaired function
7
Q
Vascular Response
A
- Vasodilation (Redness/Heat)
- Increased capillary permeability (Swelling/Loss of function)
8
Q
Cellular Stage
A
Movement of immune cells into area of injury
9
Q
Acute Inflammation
A
- Protective immune response
- Controlled and self-limiting
10
Q
Chronic Inflammation
A
- Persistant immune response
- Harmful/damaging to normal tissue
11
Q
Body Temp Regulation
A
- Tightly regulated by hypothalamus
- Fever causes increase in thermoregulatory set point
12
Q
Mild Fever
A
37-39
13
Q
High Fever
A
> 39
14
Q
Harmful Fever
A
> 40 (refer to Dr)
15
Q
Cause of Fever
A
- Usually sign of infection
- Caused by pyrogens
- Elevation of temp inhibits growth of inefective microorganisms
