Kim Bartholomew suggested there were 2 different reasons why ppl might wish to avoid being too close to others… (2)
- Ppl could want relationships with others- but we wary of them, fearing rejection and mistrusting them.
- Ppl could be independent and self-reliant preferring autonomy and freedom rather than close attachment to others.
What were the 4 attachment styles that Bartholomew proposed?
- Secure
- Preoccupied- new name for anxious ambivalent. This new name reflects that b.c they nervously depended on others’ approval to feel good about themselves- ppl worried ab the status of their relationships.
- Fearful- avoid intimacy w ppl b/c of their fears of rejection. They wanted others to like them- but worried ab risks of relying on others.
- Dismissing style- felt that intimacy with others just wasn’t worth the trouble.
What 2 broad themes underlie and distinguish the 4 different types of attachment?
- Avoidance of intimacy-affects the ease and trust with which they accept interdependent intimacy with others.
- Anxiety about abandonment- the dread that others will find them unworthy and leave them. The 3 except secure are anxious/discomfort
In most regions of the world are most ppl secure or insecure?
Insecure- secure styles are most common than any of the 3 but secure is outnumbered by the 3 all together.
Attachment styles come from what?
They are largely learned from previous relationships with others. Both babies and adults affect through their own behaviour the treatment they receive from others.
Ppl are shaped by how they’re parented as babies or and kids. But our attachment styles are also shaped by the experiences we encounter as adults.
