P6 - Transistors Flashcards
What are transistors?
They are electronic switches that control the amount of current in a circuit.
What is the circuit symbol for a transistor?
What do C, B and E stand for on a transistor?
C = Collector
B = Base
E = Emittor
What are the three parts in a transistor?
The base, collector and emitter.
How do transistors work?
A small current hits the base of the transistor allowing a larger current to pass through the collector which then exits out the emittor.
What is the formula for the current at the emitter in a transistor?
Ie = Ic + Ib
Current at emitter = Current at Collector + Base
What does the Base in a transistor do?
It is the switch that controls the circuit. A small current flows through here to turn it on.
What does the Collector in a transistor do?
The large current is taken here.
What does the Emitter in a transistor do?
The larger current flows out of here.
What does a real life transistor look like?
Each of the metal rods represents C, B and E.
what are the 2 types of silicon in a transistor?
N-Type silicon and P-Type silicon.
