P2- Nuclear Power + dangers Flashcards
What is used as the main fuel in a nuclear power station?
Uranium
How does a nuclear power station work?
Nuclear fission produces heat to make steam when the fission splits atoms of the nuclear fuel to relese lots of heat energy. Water is then used as a coolant to take away the heat produced by the fission process which then makes steam to turn the turbone and generator
Name some advantaages of nuclear power
No co2 , more energy is released than chemical reactions so less uranium to produce same amount of power as fossil fuels. Nuclear fuel is cheaper, lots of uranium left in the ground.
Name some disadvantages of nuclear power?
Power stations are expensive to build and maintain, longer to start up nuclear stations than fossil fuel ones, always a risk of leakage of radioactive material = cancer, Radioactive waste is dangerous and difficult to dispose of, uranium is a non-renewable source so will eventually run out.
