P3 - Ultrasound Flashcards
What is partial reflection of ultrasound waves?
When a wave passes from one medium to another, some is reflected and some is refracted.
How does ultrasound imaging work?
The time taken for the reflections to reach a detector can be used to measure how far away the boundary is.
What are kidney stones?
Hard masses that block the urinary tract.
How can ultrasound beams aid kidney stones?
It concentrates high-energy waves at the stone and turns it into sand-like particles.
How is ultrasound used in pre-netal scanning?
Ultrasound waves are reflected back and detected.
The timing and distribution of the echoes is processed to produce a video image.
Are ultrasound waves safe?
Yes because they’re non-ionising.
Why aren’t x rays used during pre-natal scanning?
They are ionising and can cause cancer.
What is the image quality of an ultrasound like?
Fuzzy.
What is ultrasound?
Sound with a higher frequency than we can hear.
