P2 - Forces & Elasticity Flashcards
What happens when work is done to an elastic object?
The energy is stored as elastic potential energy.
What happens to the elastic potential energy when the force is removed?
It is converted to kinetic energy.
What is the relationship between the extension of an elastic object and the force applied?
They are directly proportional.
What is the equation that links extension and force?
F = k x e.
K is the spring constant & depends on the material being stretched.
Why does the extension of an elastic object stop working when the force is great enough?
There is a limit on how much force you can apply for the extension to continue increasing proportionally.
What is the limit of proportionality on a force against extension graph?
The maximum force an object can take and still extend proportionally.
What happens if you increase the force on an elastic object past the limit of proportionality?
The material will be permanently stretched & will be longer when the force is removed.
What can happen when you apply a force to an elastic object?
It will stretch & go back to its original shape.
