P2 - Kinetic Energy Flashcards
What is the formula for kinetic energy?
Kinetic Energy = 1/2 x mass x speed2
What does kinetic energy depend on?
The mass & speed of the object.
If an object weighs more and is moving faster, will its kinetic energy be larger or smaller?
Larger.
What must you do to the kinetic energy of a moving car if you want to slow it down?
Convert the energy into other types.
What must be done to stop a moving car?
Kinetic energy must be converted to hear as friction between the wheels & brake pads, causing the temperature of the brakes to increase.
What is are the word and symbol formulas for Kinetic Energy Transferred?
Kinetic Energy Transferred = Work Done By Brakes.
1/2mv2 = Braking force x distance.
What do falling objects convert?
Potential energy to kinetic energy.
The further an object falls..
The faster it goes.
What is the relationship between kinetic energy & potential energy?
Kinetic energy gained = potential energy lost.
Why are meteors hot?
They have a high kinetic energy. Friction due to collisions with particles transfers kinetic energy to heat.
Why do most meteors burn up before reaching Earth?
The temperatures they reach are too extreme.
What the meteors called that make it through to the Earth’s surface?
A meteorite.
What do space shuttles have to prevent them re-entering the atmosphere without burning up?
Heat shields made from special materials which lose heat quickly.
What has kinetic energy?
Anything that’s moving.
