p2 - topic 10: humanistic psychology Flashcards
humanistic psychology characteristics
- emphasis mainly in relationships that we form in others
- every individual is different from each other, phonological aspect, we must be in client’s reality which is what will help -> helps the developmental process of client
- attachment is the basis of everything if you want to help someone
self actualisation (rogers)
- process of becoming a person
living and constantly developing (driven by a development force, which is inside a person), you can always trust your innate tendency to grow and develop - a need for development is the only motivation leading towards self actualisation
important aspects of roger’s theory
organismic valuing process: constant matching and evaluation of the experience
fully functioning person is open to own experience (without distortion), trusts own instincts and feelings, always finds new aspects and will always try to thrive to have a close link between experience and mental representation
need for positive regards (conditional and unconditional)
conditions of worth - acting by these to be judged worthy by others
organismic valuing process
people’s innate ability to know what is important to them, their own best directions in life that will lead them toward greater well-being and a more fulfilling existence
two main forces of motivations
constant development (ego psych, adapting to environment)
positive regards from others (object relations theory with attachment)
viewpoint of therapy from humanistic point of view
if client is boring, or not saying much: something is blocking the person from being a vivid individual, aim of therapy is to deal with that blockage, to be able to offer a relationship to the person, which helps in finding their own organismic valuing process
three main conditions of an optimal relationship
unconditional positive regard
empathy
congruence
main goal: to offer a good enough relationship
rogers believed this is how therapy should be built
locus of evaluation
that to which people refer in order to make judgment about themselves, others and the world
internal locus and external locus
empathy definition
trying to understand really deeply what the other person is going through and how it’s like to be that person
congruence definition
reflecting what you feel about the client -> a form of self-awareness, being aware of your own feelings
transparent about what you experience
self-determination theory
to acquire a fully functioning life and well-being, we need to satisfy autonomy, relatedness, competence
four topics of existential psychology
death
isolation
meaning
freedom
main focus in therapy
always keep relationship in mind (what helps in deepening the relationship)
always keep the original problem in mind in guiding you through the process
use your own experience (feelings, thoughts) as pieces of info about the client (understand them, don’t act based on them)
