P1 5b selective breeding Flashcards
1
Q
what is selective breeding?
A
selecting individuals with desirable characteristics and breed them together
2
Q
how does selective breeding happen?
A
animals with the desired traits are breed together and then offspring with the desired traits are also breed together, and its repeated for many successive generations
3
Q
what are plants selectively breed for?
A
- disease resistance
- increased crop yield
- hardiness to weather
- better taste
- size
4
Q
what are animals selectively breed for?
A
- animals that produce a lot of milk
- chicken that lay large eggs
- domestic dogs with specific natures
- horses that are fast
5
Q
what are the problems with selective breeding?
A
- can lead to inbreeding
- results in a reduction in the gene pool, reduction in alleles in a population
6
Q
what happens when inbreeding limits the gene pool?
A
- organisms inherit harmful genetic defects
- they are vulnerable to new diseases
