Overview Flashcards
What Does it mean for a drug to have a high potency
Means the drug will show its affect at a lower dose
Higher MAC= Lower potency
Potency and lipid solubiity
Increase potency occurs when you have an increased lipid solubility
Blood Solubility
A decrease in blood solubility mean that the drug will act faster (does not matter the dose)
Increased onset of action with higher solubility
blood gas partition coefficent
comparing blood solubility to gas solubility of the gas drug
MAC
Measure of potency
Measure of the concentration it take for 50 people to show the effects of the drug this means the the higher the MAC the lower the potency
Nitrous Oxide solubility and MAC
Nitrous oxide has a low blood gas partition (low blood solubility) so it will show its affects very rapidly
Nitrous oxide has a high MAC (you need a large amount before you would ever see the affects)
Nitrous Oxide Solubility
Because it has such a low solubility in the blood it will not stick around in the blood very fast and will go to the brain very fast (blood does not hold it for long)
Diffusion Hypoxia
When we use nitrous oxide it will equliibrate between the brain blood and lungs very fast.
If you turn off the ventilator all of the nitrous oxide will rush back into the lungs in order to be removed from the body, remember it has a low solubility in blood so it will not stay in the blood for long and rather rush back to alveoli
The nitrous oxide in lung will then be decreased the oxygen concentration (opposite of the second gas effect) because the oxygen does not have enough time to equilibrate concnetrations back into the lungs
Diffusion Hypoxia Treatment
Ventilate with 100% oxygen
