What is a perceived risk?
Imagined risk sought by teachers and leaders to five learners a sense of adventure and opportunities for personal challenge and development
What is real risk?
Is avoided at all costs by careful preparation and use or appropriate kit an equipment. Real risk is sometimes embraced by committed experts seeking great challenges
Unpredictability
Setting in the guest environment often has uncontrolled elements
What is the difference between perceived and real risk?
Perceived- imagined, completely safe
Real- actual, can be dangerous or even fatal
How can real risk be avoided?
Careful preparation
Use of appropriate kit and equipment

As part of structured school or college programme
Special trips or visits
Who?
Young people
Qualified/ specialist leaders/ staff
Where?
Natural environment
Semi-natural or artificial facilities
How?
Strict health and safety regulations
Sometimes by unwelcoming potential constraints
What are the benefits?
Personal and social development- leadership, co-operation, mental strength, decision making
Physical health and skills- physical fitness and knowledge of sailing or climbing
Preparation for lifelong physical activity- a lifelong love for the outdoors
Enhancement of quality of life- appreciation for environment awareness of conservation issues
Constraints
Distance from the natural environment
Expense of specialist activities or transport
Lack of staff expertise or qualifications
Expense in terms of time
Reluctance of staff/ health and safety concerns
Lack of specialist facilities or equipment
Perceived risk
Actively encouraged by teachers to give students the opportunity to experience:
