To improve participation in physical activity young people need
Government initiatives such as PESSYP- encouraging physical activity in schools and a positive school experience
Initiatives from sport England, U.K. Sport and the NGBs
More funding and more facilities, more coaches, more clubs more competition
Benefits for the elderly in physical activity
Health: improved CV function, strength and flexibility and wellbeing
Social: self confidence, enjoyment and fun
Psychological benefits: keeping the mind active
Barriers for the elderly
Media: portrays a young person sport
Illness or injury
Perceived roles: administrators, volunteers and spectators
Role models: not Enough elderly people involved in leading and coaching
Income: lack of disposable income
To increase participation in the elderly
Opportunity: reduce entrance fees, greater variety of activities
Provision: more leaders more clubs improved transport
Esteem: respect and endorsement and role models
Disability barriers
Perception: consisted dependent
Lack of money: 3/4 live off state benefits

What are the barriers for women?
Stereotyping: women need equal opportunity and provision to participate and excel
Myth busting: led to discrimination
Media coverage: under presented in all areas of the media
Spectators and the media: predominately male audiences and male presenters preferring power and speed
Ethnic minority barriers
Racial discrimination: unfair treatment of people based on race due to prejudice
Inner city facilities: ethnic groups based in cities where the facilities are poor
Positive discrimination: favouritism for an ethnic group in order to give them a chance
Stereotyping: some participates are channelled into certain sports or positions within sport based on their race
Excellent role models for spit but due to there being so many excellent sports people it is accurately believe that there is not a problem
Measures to increase participation and excellence for ethnic minorities
Raise awareness of racial inequality in sport, e,g kick it out
More officials, coaches and team managers
Role models: increase participation to encourage more role models from ethnic minorities
Cultural provision: provide for cultural groups to allow them to pursue their own cultural activities

OPE- offer the same opportunities and facilities to women as is offered to men
Media: greater media coverage to women’s sport to allow for more followers models
Sponsorship: women’s sport accounts for only 0.5% of the total UK market
Female coaches: train more female sports coaches for a variety of different sports
Equal prize money: equal prize money for working just as hard
