Baron Pierre de coubertin had s vision of using sport to educate young people and increase internal understanding

Amateurism.- early modern games were strictly amateur
Inspired by his visits to the English public schools who were obsessed with playing team games
He was also inspired by Dr William Penny Brooke’s who founded the Wenlock Olympian games in 1850
Role of the IOC

Ensure that the commercialism of the games is managed and that the games are not exploited to the detriment of the games

Status/ image- increased image of country
Hosting- puts them on the map
Shop window- the world sees the best of the nation
Example of hosting- tourism, economic
Political tool- reflects political success
Cover up- Beijing was an opportunity for China to cover up human rights problems
