How does glue ear present?
A
- hearing loss, that may be interpreted as lack of concentration
- recurrent ear pain, otitis media and balance problems

On otoscopy how does the drum look?
A
- opacification of the drum (other than due to scarring)
- no signs of inflammation
- loss of the light reflex
- indrawn, retracted drum
- presence of a fluid level

what kind of hearing loss will the child have?
what is the prognosis?
A
- conductive
- self limiting but recurrence is common

what advice should be given to parents?
what non surgical action should you take?
A
- advise to face child when speaking and to speak slow loud and clear. Encourage reading
- hearing aids

who is at higher risk of getting glue ear (Otitis media with effusion)?
A
- cleft palate infection
- Downs syndrome
- cystic fibrosis

what surgery should you have for glue ear?
what are the grounds?
A
- grommets
- persistent bilateral OME for >3 months
- hearing loss >25 dB
