what kind of symptoms might you expect?
A
- vomiting
- failure to thrive
- oesophagitis
- aspiration

what kind of things may oesophagitis cause as a consequence?
A
- irritability
- anorexia
- blood in vomit/ occult in stools

what non specific signs may you see in a younger child particularly?
A
- opisthotonos (arching of the back)
- variable head posturing

what can aspiration manifest itself as?
A
- choking episodes
- pneumonia

what adverse emergency effects can reflux cause?
A
- reflex apnoea and bradycardia

what investigations might you perform? (3)
A
- barium swallow
- 24 hour pH probe
- oesophagoscopy with biopsy

what is the lifestyle/ dietary advice given?
medications?

A
- thickening feeds
- propping child
- attempt burping
- pro kinetics (erythromycin) to promote gastric emptying
- ranitidine/ omeprazole in oesophagitis
- recurrent aspiration
- apnoea
- fundoplication
