What is Otitis Media?
infection of the middle ear
Causes of otitis media
- blockage of the ear canal, leading to germs getting trapped
- children are predisposed
Symptoms of Otitis Media
- fluid in the middle ear
- pain in the ear
- fever
- bulging eardrum
- hearing loss
Medication for Otitis Media
Amoxicillin
Co-amoxiclav
cefuroxime
Dosing for Amoxicillin
500mg - 1g TDS
Duration of Amoxicillin
5-7 days
Dosing for Co-amoxiclav
1 tablet q12h
Duration of Co-amoxiclav
5-7 days
Dosing of Cefuroxime
250mg - 500mg BD
Duration of cefuroxime
5-7 days
What drugs can be prescribed if patient is allergic to penicillin?
Macrolides can be given:
clarithromycin and azithromycin
What is otitis externa?
also known as swimmer’s ears, affects the external part of the ear
signs and symptoms of otitis externa
- otalgia (earache)
- significant swelling of the canal
- fever may be present
What are otic preparation used for otitis externa?
Polydexa
Dose for Polydexa
adult:
1-5 drops of BD for 6-10 days
Child:
1-2 drops BD for 6-10days
