OSPE EBV Flashcards
case
fever, sore throat, and lymphadenopathy. Blood work up showed signs of transient mild hepatitis. Peripheral blood smears showed more than 10% of atypical lymphocytosis
Specimens collected
saliva, blood, or lymphoid tissue
Tests for Detection of Epstein Barr virus infection:
-Detection of EBV DNA (by PCR), Real-time PCR quantifying EBV DNA
-EBV antigens (by direct-IF technique)
-Virus isolation: It is laborious, time-consuming (6- 8 weeks) and highly sophisticated, hence non routinely performed
Serological tests for Antibody Detection
EBV-specific Antibody Detection- HIGH RISE IN Anti-VCA IgM in ELISA
Differential absorption test- is done for confirmation. Patient’s serum is first made to react with guinea pig kidney cells and ox red cells, following which Paul Bunnell test is repeated
