Orthopedic conditions Flashcards
What % of a dog’s body weight do the hips bear?
40%
What % of a dog’s body weight do the hindlimbs bear at a trot?
70%
What are some exercises that you would recommend for canine hip dysplasia?
Slow walking up and down hills, stepping over objects, UWT, Swimming, Figure of 8’s, weaving thru poles, wheelbarrow, theraball, balance exercises, ROM
What would rehab look like for a patellar luxation?
Ice. glides to stretch soft tissue, weight loss, NMES, walking shallow water, stretching adducter, hamstring, gastroc, quads
What forces cause CCL rupture?
Excessive internal rotation and hyperextension
What factors increase risk of CCL rupture?
Being neutered, weighing>22kg, breed, anatomical conformation abnormalities
What would be a good rehab treatment post surgery for CCL rupture?
NMES (TENS) for pain, Passive ROM, Balance and proprioceptive exercises, owner education, Massage, Gait training with assistance
What does UWTM do for dog’s gait after cruciate surgery?
Helps to straighten gait
What are some exercises used in a rehab program postop TPLO?
Controlled walking, strengthening (ramps, Stairs), figure 8’s, dancing, aquatics, cross training
Why use ice, bandage, and Nsaid’s postop TPLO?
It causes a lot of distal limb edema
True or False Any lameness in forelimb is significant
True
If there is swelling due to torn mm over shoulder think
Long head of triceps, supraspinatous
If there is contracture around shoulder think
infraspinatous
What is the pathognomonic sign of OCD?
Pain on extension of shoulder in young dog
What is first thing to do for Biceps tenosynovitis?
They are very lame so restrict activity, esp jumping. Ice, stretching, and possibly deep friction massage
How to palpate to find Biceps tenosynovitis?
Flex shoulder and extend elbow to detect pain.
What types of dogs usually get infraspinatus contracture?
Hunting dogs in a muddy field This is an overuse strain
What does the gait look like with infraspinatus contraction?
In the swing phase the elbow is adducted, shoulder ER, distal limb abduction, short stride length. Carpus flips forward at end of swing.
What three disease can cause elbow dysplasia?
FCP, UAP, OCD
What are differential diagnosis foor elbow dysplasia?
Panosteitis, Hypertrophic osteodystrophy
Where in the elbow should you look for effusion?
Craniomedial compartment and caudolateral compartment
What sign will you see in the elbow with UAP?
pain on hyperextension
What sign will you see in the elbow with OCD or FCP?
pain on flexors, internal and external rotation with digital pressure applied to medial jt
What might rehab look like post op for surgical correction of elbow dysplasia?
Passive ROM shoulder, elbow, carpus
Exercise restriction 21 days
Strengthening exercises, swimming
