What are they?
used to align (straighten) crooked teeth, so that pt is able to carry out effective oral hygiene techniques + prevent caries or periodontal disease form developing
Fixed appliance
composed of individual metal or ceramic components bonded onto each tooth + connected together by an archwire, they cannot be removed from mouth by pt
Removable + functional appliances
composed of acrylic base with stainless steel clasps + springs (in both upper + lower jaws for functional), these can be removed from mouth for cleaning, eating + adjustment
the range possible for both types of appliance is:
movement of teeth forwards or backwards in each arch - removable + fixed
movement of jaws in relation to each other - functional + fixed
alignment of slightly misplaced teeth in arch - removable + fixed
alignment of severely misplaced teeth in arch - fixed
derotation of teeth - fixed
Guided eruption - fixed
guided reduction of deep overbite - removable + fixed
