A quality assurance system
to ensure safety + appropriate use of personal + pt info. it brings together all legal rules, guidance + info on best practice that apply to handling info. Compliance with IG requirements should then show that they can be trusted to maintain confidentiality + security
For healthcare organisations
the department of health has developed a set of ig requirements in a toolkit form which enables NHS organisations to measure the level of their own compliance
These requirements cover following areas:
data protection + confidentiality information security information quality health records management corporate information (where relevant)
The main points that ever NHS workplace must have a named IG lead person on premises who takes responsibility for:
- registering the workplace on ig toolkit websites
- accessing toolkit requirements + completing them on behalf of workplace’s current systems of data security + maintenance
- using the underpinning procedures + processes of the toolkit to develop the IG policy for workplace

- ensure all staff are aware of organisations approach to IG + where further info can be found - hard copy of ig policy kept on premises
- aim for best practice by reviewing policy + compliance with requirements of toolkit annually + updating
- where amendments mace, they must be signed off by senior person in organisation

confirm named person at primary care trust who acts as the caldicott guardian for the workplace - the person with specialist knowledge in area of confidentiality + IG issues, who can help, support + advise workplace in matters of pt protection + confidentiality
The IG policy must contain following info:
- why policy is required
- give overview of how info should be handled including: storage of data, consent to view data + situations where info disclosure may be required
- give description of accountability + responsibility for policy including name of IG lead + job roles of support staff

- state process of policy monitoring
- state staff duties + responsibility in relation to IG
- actions to take if policy is breached: sanctions against staff involved + remedial work for those responsible for IG procedures, to avoid future breaches
