Consent Outline Flashcards
Consent to treatment
No matter what info an OH assessment reveals + therefore what dental trt a pt requires, the dental team must gain consent from the pt before that trt can be provided
What is consent?
the pt or their legal guardian giving permission to the dental professional for trt to physical investigation to be carried out. It is a legal + ethical principle that consent must first be given + reflects the right of pts to decide what happens to their own bodies
It cannot be assumed
that their attendance at workplace is a signal for any type of ‘hands on’ trt to be carried out without gaining consent before touching pt is considered assault
The GDC would consider this occurrence
as serious professional misconduct + may suspend or remove the dp from the register
To gain consent, three key principles must be addressed:
Informed= the pt must be given enough info to be able to make a decision, + in issues of trt options this must include a host of info
Voluntary decision= the pt alone must make a decision to proceed without coercion or threat
Ability= the pt must actually have the ability to make an informed decision
