Fixed orthodontic appliance Flashcards
what do they consist of?
separate stainless steel or ceramic components called brackets which are individually bonded onto each tooth, using light cured resin material.
Molar teeth
often have a circular metal device laced instead called orthodontic band + these can the be cemented with any type of luting cement
The filling procedure (bonding)
carried out in surgery causes no tooth damage + they are ‘snapped off’ at the end of trt using special orthodontic instruments
Archwire
flexible nickel titanium or stainless steel wires to fasten into brackets or bands
End cutters
right angled cutters to trim ends to archwire after replacement
Alastiks
rubber bands to hold archwire into slots of each bracket
Alastik holders
ratcheted holders (similar to artery forceps) to apply alastiks to brackets
Brackets
metal or ceramic components attach to each tooth if any have been lost since last appt
Bands
metal rings attach to molars especially, although bands available for all teeth + were only attachments available before brackets were developed
Bracket holders
to hold + position each bracket to centre of tooth, if any replacements required
Bracket + band removers
to remove brackets, bands + any residual bond material before replacing if necessary
Bonding materials
Acid etch + ortho resin bond material, to hold brackets onto tooth
Band cement
any luting cement material, to hold bands onto molar teeth
