Occlusion Flashcards
What is occlusion?
the term to describe situation when mouth is closed + teeth of both jaws interlock together so that their occlusal surfaces are in contact.
The cusps of the teeth in one arch should interdigitate with the tissues + inter proximal areas of the other
In normal occlusion
all teeth are well aligned + no crowding or protruding + no undue prominence of the chin. Upper incisors slightly overlap the lowers vertically + horizontally + special names are given to this overlap: (vertical overlap - overbite) (horizontal overlap - overjet)
With the mouth closed + teeth touching in occlusion
the position of first molars + canines in each jaw determines the ideal occlusion + malocclusion. Called Angle’s classification
Ideal class 1 occlusion
occurs where the mesiobuccal cusp of the upper first molar lies in the buccal grove of the lower first molar. the ideal overjet is 2.4mm + ideal overbite is 50%
For teeth to erupt into normal occlusion
the jaw must br in correct horizontal + vertical relationship + of sufficient size to accommodate full complement of teeth. Teeth can then erupt into normal positions of balance between pressures exerted by lips, cheeks + tongue of dental arches
