What is it caused by?

A

insufficient room for all teeth to erupt in line + occurs in jaws which are too small to accommodate 32 permanent teeth.

As the permanent dentition erupts

A

the teeth become crooked + overlapping as those which are normally last to erupt cannot take their proper position in dental arch as there is insufficient room left

Specific teeth

A

upper canines are usually displaced buccal, lower second premolars lingually + lower third molars are impacted within the bone of the mandible at the ramus

Early XLA of carious deciduous molars

A

also contributes to crowding. the gap left by an XLA soon closes, as remaining posterior tooth drifts forwards + takes up some of the space required for the permanent successor
