Q

what happens in coronary heart disease?

A

layers of fatty material build up inside the coronary arteries, causing coronary arteries to narrow. effect of this is to reduce flow of blood through the coronary arteries. results in lack of oxygen for the heart muscle. could result in a heart attack

9
Q

advantages and disadvantages of using a stent

A

advantage:
- blood can flow normally

disadvantage:
-doesn’t prevent other regions of coronary arteries from narrowing
-doesn’t treat underlying cause of disease

Q

what problems can valve cause?

A
  • don’t fully open so heart has to pump extra hard to get blood through. causing heart to enlarge
  • valves are leaky causing patient to feel weak and tired

16
Q

problems with donated hearts

A

-not enough for everyone
- patient must take drugs to stop immune system from rejecting the heart

17
Q

disadvantage of artificial heart

A

increase risk of blood clotting.not along-term solution to heart failure
