cell biology - cell division by mitosis Flashcards
where are chromosomes found? + made of?
in the nucleus
made of the molecule DNA
how many chromosomes do the body cells contain?
two of each = paired
how many chromosomes does the human body cell contain?
23 pairs
chromosomes of gamete?
chromosomes not paired e.g human gamete have 23 single chromosomes
what do chromosomes carry?
a large number of genes which determine many of our features
what is the cell cycle?
where cells have to divide
what happens in the first stage of the cell cycle/mitosis?
DNA replicates to form two copies of each chromosome. cell grows and copies its internal structures such as mitochondria and ribosomes
what happens in second stage of cell cycle?
mitosis takes place. one set of chromosomes is pulled to each end of the cell. the cell nucleus divides
what happens in final stage of cell cycle?
cytoplasm and cell membrane divide to form two identical cells
what are the functions of mitosis?
- essential for growth and development of multicellular organisms (plant and animal)
- takes place when an organism repairs itself ( eg broken bone heals )
- happens during asexual reproduction
