cell biology - osmosis Flashcards
what is osmosis?
the diffusion of water from a dilute solution (low concentration) to a concentrated solution (higher concentration) through a partially permeable membrane
what is the function of a partially permeable membrane?
allows some molecules to pass through but not all
what is the concentration of water in a dilute solution?
high
what is the concentration of water in a concentrated solution?
low
what is the concentration of the cytoplasm?
low concentration of water
what is the affect of osmosis on a cell when it is placed in water?
water will move from outside the cell into the cell, causing the cell to expand and in some cases burst (low to high)
what is the affect of osmosis on a cell when placed in a concentrated solution?
water move out of the cell and cell will shrink
what happens to a plant cell when placed in water?
water will move into the cell and expand but it won’t burst as the cell wall stops it. scientists say it is turgid
what happens to a plant cell when placed in a concentrated solution?
water will move out of the cell causing it to shrink. cell is now flaccid
