cell biology - active transport Flashcards
what is active transport?
moves substances from a more dilute solution (lower concentration) to a more concentrated solution (higher concentration) against concentration gradient. this requires energy from respiration
differences between diffusion and active transport
diffusion: moves particles down concentration gradient. doesn’t require energy from respiration
active transport: moves particles against concentration gradient. requires energy
how does small intestine used active transport?
food digested in lumen into molecules such as sugars. concentration of sugars in lumen is lower than in the cell so sugars carried by active transport and then diffuse into the the blood
describe use of active transport in plant cells
ions transported from soil which has a lower concentration into the root hair cell where there is a higher concentration of ions. ions then transported to xylem and then rest of the leaf. plant cell have lots of mitochondria for energy
