What is the pharmacodynamics of Ondansetron?
A
- 5HT-3 antagonist
- Serotonin thought to trigger vomiting reflex
- Ondansetron blocks serotonin receptors

A
- Undifferentiated nausea and vomiting
- Prohpylaxis

Ondansetron Contraindications
A
- Apomorphine

Why is Apomorphine a contraindication for Ondansetron
A
- Can cause profound Hypotension and loss of consciousness

Ondansetron Precautions
A
- Pregnancy 1st trimester
- Congenital Long QT syndrome (Dose-dependent effect)
- Severe Hepatic disease (Cirrhosis) maximum daily intake 8mg
- ODT may contain aspartame which should be avoided in patients with phenylketonuria

Ondansetron adverse effects
A
- CNS: Headache, dizziness
- CV: QT prolongation
- GI: Constipation
- Other: Visual Disturbance, transient loss of vision (associated with rapid IV administration

What are considerations for pregnant people recieving ondansetron?
A
1st trimester -consult with receiving hospital
2nd and 3rd Trimester- Only in SEVERE and benefits outweigh risks

How fast should IV ondansetrom be administered?
A
- preferably 3-5minutes
