Pharmacodynamics of Morphine

  • Bind to Kappa, Mu receptors
  • Mimics action of opioid peptides and antagonises to stimulate pain centres in CNS and spinal cord

A

CNS: Drowsiness, respiratory depression, Euphoria, N+V, Addiction, Pin-point pupiles

Cardiovascular: Hypotension, Bradycardia

Why is Morphine contraindicated in renal Impairment?

A
  • Accumulation of Metabolites M3G and M6G mediates CNS depression and wont be cleared quick enough in renally impaired patients
