AETIOLOGY

What causes bursitis

A
  • Friction from repetive movements or leaning on elbow
  • Trauma
  • Inflammatory conditions (eg RA or gout)
  • Infection (eg septic bursitis)

Presentation

A
  • Young/middle aged man with elbow that is
    • Swollen
    • Warm
    • Tender
    • Fluctuant (fluid filled)
  • Maybe features of infection
    • Hot to touch
    • More tender
    • Erythema spreading to surrounding skin
    • fever
    • Features of sepsis

  • Septic arthritis
    • Swelling in joint (rather than bursa)
    • Painful and reduced range of motion in elbow
