What are bursae
A
Sacs created by synovial membrane with small amounts of synovial fluid, found at bony prominences such as greater trochanter, knee and elbow
Act to reduce fruction between bones and soft tissue during movement

AETIOLOGY
What causes bursitis
A
- Friction from repetive movements or leaning on elbow
- Trauma
- Inflammatory conditions (eg RA or gout)
- Infection (eg septic bursitis)

CLINICAL FEATURES
Presentation
A
- Young/middle aged man with elbow that is
- Swollen
- Warm
- Tender
- Fluctuant (fluid filled)
- Maybe features of infection
- Hot to touch
- More tender
- Erythema spreading to surrounding skin
- fever
- Features of sepsis

What is important differential
A
- Septic arthritis
- Swelling in joint (rather than bursa)
- Painful and reduced range of motion in elbow
