AETIOLOGY

Pathophysiology

A
  • Tendon sheath surrounds tendons, formed by connective tissue (synovial membrane), helping to lubricate and protect movement of tendons
  • Extensor retiniculum is fibrous band wrapping around dorsal side of wrist. APL and EPB pass underneath this
  • Repetative movement of these tendons result in inflammation and welling of tendon sheaths

Q

What is Finkelsteins test

A
  • Patient rests forearm on surface in neutral position with wrist hanging off and unsupported
  • Examiner holds thumb and passively flexes it into palm, causing wrist to adduct (ulnar deviation), putting strain on APL and EPB tendons
  • If this causes pain on radial aspect wrist then positive
