Oceans Yr10 Flashcards
What are Food Chains
A food chain describes how energy and nutrients move through an ecosystem
What are producers
Things that make their own food from CO2 and water and sunlight
What are consumers
Things that eat other living things
What are Primary Consumers
Organisms that eat producers
What are secondary consumers
Organisms that eat primary consumers
What are tertiary consumers
Organisms that each secondary consumers
What is a food web
A food web consists of all the food chains in a ecosystem
What does it mean if an arrow is pointing at an animal
It shows the flow of nutrients and energy so if the arrow is pointing at an organism, it means that organism is gaining nutrients and energy from the organism which the arrow is coming from
What is an energy pyramid
A pyramid that shows how uch energy is passed on through a food chain
Only about 10% of the energy consumed is passed up the food chain. The rest of the energy is used up by the animal that got eaten for metabolic processes such as heat and surviving or is excreted.
What is a Habitat
A place that an organism lives that contains all the things it needs to survive
What is a abiotic factor
Non living parts of the habitat like temperature, sun and water
What is a biotic factor
living parts of the habitat like organisms, trees and grass
What are adaptations
The process where a species evolves its characteristics that it enable it to survive in a specific habitat
What are physical adaptations
A changing feature of a living thing in an animal’s looks and build to help it survive
What are behavioral adaptations
Something an animals does and changes in the way they feed, move or breed
What are Microplastics
Microplastics are tiny plastics that are produced when plastic items are broken down by environmental factors like waves and radiation.
How to make oceans more sustainable with fishing methods
Ban use of destructive equipment that can destroy marine life and also catch unwanted fish
Fishing less and only taking what is needed
Enforcing safe areas so that some areas of ocean cannot be fished so it can regenerate and ocean life can regrow
What are the spheres of the world
- hydrosphere = water in a solid or liquid state (oceans, rivers, lakes, seas)
- geosphere or lithosphere = system associated with the solid rocky portions of Earth and all the things that shape Earth the way it is (rock, mountains, sea bed)
- atmosphere = particles in the air (clouds, gases, hurricanes)
- biosphere = all living things on Earth (animals, plants)
Who is tane
The god of forests and trees
Who is Mauri
Respect for life and for the things the creators have made
Who is Te Po
The long dark knight
What is Te Wehenga
The separation of Earth and Sky
Who is ranginui
The Sky father
What is kaitiakitanga
Guardianship and managing of the environment
Who is tane
The one who separated his parents by pushing them apart.
What is an ecosystem
Different organisms interacting with each other in an environment
What is a decomposer
Something that breaks down decaying or dead organisms
What is sustainability
Meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
