What are Forces
A force is a push, twist or pull
Can a force be seen
No, but you can see its effects on objects
How do Forces work together
Forces work in Pairs. There is always a opposite force going against it.
What are the forces and their direction
Support - Up
Weight - Down
Gravity - Down
Friction, Air resistance and Drag - Backwards
Thrust/Forward - Forwards
What is weight
Downwards force due to Gravity
What is Upthrust
Upwards force exerted on an object in water. This is the support force in water
What is Friction
Resistive force due to 2 objects in contact that opposes motion by slowing objects down.
What is Air resistance
Resistive force due to moving through air
What is Lift
Force that uses motion to make an objetc rise. Lift is the support force for air.
What is a support force
The upward force that balances the weight of an object on a surface is called the support force. A support force is often called the normal force. An example is a book on a shelf. The shelf is exerting a support force on the book by holding it up. IT IS ANY FORCE THAT MAKES AN OBJECT STAY UP OR GO UP
What is Newton’s first law
AN object will remain at rest or constant uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an external force.
What does Friction cause
Heat and wear and tear is generated at the point of contact
What are balanced forces
Balanced forces are when all opposite forces are equal.
This means the object if STOPPED, will remain stopped
This means if the object is MOVING, it will move at a constant speed in a straight line
This is called equilibrium
What are unbalanced forces
Unbalanced Forces are when the opposite forces are not equal.
This means the speed of the object will change and accelerate in the direction with the higher opposite force
It means the direction of the motion of the object will change to the direction with the higher opposite forces
What is the sum effect of the opposite force
It is the resultant force and is calculated by working out the DIFFERENCE between the opposite forces.
