Ocean Floor and Chemistry Review Flashcards
What are the names of the 5 oceans? (smallest-largest)
Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, Arctic
What percentage of our Earth is covered by oceans
71%
What are 2 possible ways that oceans formed on Earth over 4 billion years ago?
1) Comets with ice that collided with Earth and melted
2) Volcanic steam condensing into clouds, causing rain to fall for a continuous time period
Difference between deep ocean basin and Continental margin?
Cont. Margin- Contains the ocean features that are made of continental crust
Deep Ocean Basin- Contains the ocean features that are made of oceanic crust
2 ways a passive continental margin is different from an active continental margin?
1) Active has subduction and Passive doesn’t
2) The cont. shelf in a passive margin is larger than in an active
Four different ways to explore the ocean floor
1) Sonar (SO Navigation And Ranging)
2) Satellites- View the ocean from space
3) Piloted Vessels (surface controlled)
4) Robotic Submersibles- No one is inside the thingy, they control it from above water
Why is the ocean salty and why does it stay salty?
Salty b/c river runoff causes minerals to weather down and the river carries them to the water
Stays salty b/c when water evaporates, the salt does not
Which is denser- salt water or fresh water?
Salt water because the salt and minerals in it give it more mass; therefore, it’s denser
How do we measure the specific gravity of water?
Using a hydrometer
What is salinity?
A measure of the amount of dissolved salts in a given amount of liquid
How is salinity measured?
Parts Per Thousand (PPT)
How does high rate of evaporation affect the salinity of water?
+evaporation = +salinity
How does slow moving water affect the salinity of water?
-movement = +salinity
How does the addition of fresh water affect the salinity of water?
+fresh water = -salinity
surface zone
warm, sunlight reaches, temp. depends on latitude
