Ocean Exploration Flashcards
HMS Challenger
Tied a wire to a weight and dropped it overboard, reached the bottom and pulled it up and measured the length of the wet wire
Sonar
(SOund Navigation And Ranging) Sends sound waves to the ocean floor and they bounce back up, deeper the water, longer the round trip
Seasat
(Satellite) focused on the ocean, send images back to Earth, allowed scientists to measure the direction and speed of ocean currents
Geosat
(Once a top-secret military satellite) measured slight changes in the height of the oceans surface
Alvin
Can reach some of the deepest parts of the ocean, searched for sunken ships and lost hydrogen bombs (piloted)
Deep Flight
Underwater airplane, explored deep ocean, moves like an airplane (piloted)
Jason II
(robotic) flown by pilot at the surface, explores ocean floor
Medea
attached to Jason II and explores above the sea floor
