OCB02-2024 Stimuli causing salivary secretion Flashcards
What the % contributions of each gland to whole mouth saliva in the resting phase?
Parotid= 20%
Submandibular/ sublingual= 70%
Minor glands= 10%
What the % contributions of each gland to whole mouth saliva in the stimulated phase?
Parotid= 60%
Submandibular/ sublingual= 35%
Minor glands= 5%
What is the role of saliva in taste perception?
Food components need the be dissolved in saliva to reach taste buds
Low NaCl allows sensitive perception to salt in food
Low buffer allows perception of acid food/ drink
Saliva has trophic influence on taste buds
What stimuli may cause salivary secretion?
Masticatory
Gustatory
Olfactory
Psychic
What is the masticatory salivary reflex?
Chewing on one side stimulates increased salivary flow on the same side of the mouth the chewing occurs so ipsilateral flow is greater than contralateral flow
What is the structure involved in the masticatory reflex?
Type of mechanoreceptor called Ruffini ending in PDL which leads to salivary secretions
What is evidence against salivary secretion from Ruffini ending? What does this suggest?
When there is no chewing, there is no saliva production
Edentulous patients still have masticatory reflexes
Suggests a role for gingival mechanoreceptors
What is salivary output directly proportional to?
Masticatory reflexes
What is the gustatory salivary reflex?
Stimuli delivered to gustatory receptors in taste buds
Taste buds rapidly adapt to taste component
What are the 5 basic tastes?
Sour Umami Salt Bitter Sweet
What is umami
The monosodium glutamate ions
Why is fat not a basic taste?
Fat stimulation does not cause a salivary repsonse
Which gland does the olfactory salivary reflex operate?
Sub manidbular
What is the psychic salivary reflex?
Seeing/thinking of food does not increase secretions
Mouth-watering is the expulsion of pre-made saliva due to muscle activity surrounding salivary ducts
It is not a true reflex
